Clinton was a single man, a seaman who had just returned from a ship assignment. On getting to his apartment, he got down to clean the dirty apartment as would be expected after four months of being away with no occupant.

Suddenly a loud noise was heard from passers-by from his apartment. They rushed to his apartment, opened the door only to find him on the floor in an excruciating pain with a twisted ankle. With the pain he was pointing to the back of his bed shouting at the top of his voice: snake, snake! One of the neighbors who was bold enough, walked to the direction he was pointing at, found the snake and brought it out – dead!

Clinton, while clearing the cobweb hanging above his bed, momentarily looked at the back of his bed, saw the snake, assuming it was still alive and jumped in great fear off the bed thereby landing wrongly and twisted his ankle. For the fear of death, Clinton was immobilized for months not knowing that death is dead!

Death is inevitable for all mankind and the thought of it brings great discomfort to many. One of the many signs of fear of death is manifested when the subject of will writing is discussed. The fear of death has killed many prematurely. There have been reported cases of people who suffered severe heart attack or stroke as a result medical diagnosis only to find out the diagnosis was wrong.

It is therefore clear that many are living in the fear of death. Fear keeps a man in bondage and worst still is the fear of death. For a man living in the fear of death, death is not what he’s actually afraid of; it is the uncertainty about what awaits him after death. However, no one needs to be uncertain about this. There are two outcomes after death; eternal life in heaven with God or eternal death in hell fire with Satan and his angels. Death is therefore a platform for transiting into either of these.

All men were doomed and bound for hell hence the fear of death which was previously the platform for stepping only into eternal death until Jesus Christ came on earth to intervene. Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; and deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. Heb. 2:14-15

By dying on the cross, Jesus Christ destroyed the one who holds the power of death - Satan. Death in itself has no power, it’s only empowered by Satan whose work Christ destroyed once and for all. This is what the scriptures predicted saying: O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 1Cor.15:55. Death as a result begins to answer to Christ, its new Boss, and because it answers to Christ, it answers to whoever believes in Him. Such person can tear the doctor’s report and say: I shall live and not die. And when it is their time to die, they are not perplexed.

Apostle Paul says: Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; and ye are Christ's; and Christ is God's (1Cor 3:22-23). With certainty he further declares: For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain (Php.1:21). He was so sure of the outcome that he calls it gain and he knew he’s going to a better place and that can only be heaven (Php. 1:23).

If you are afraid of death, it is because you are not sure of your eternity and you are most likely on your way to hell. However in the light of what Christ has done, no man should go to hell. Going to hell is the second death and it’s eternal. All it takes to avert going to hell and going to heaven instead is a decision, a decision to switch sides, a decision to join those that have been delivered from the bondage of fear, even the fear of death, the team of those who have dominion over death.

You too can make that decision today by making the following declaration boldly and believe in your heart: Lord Jesus, I come to you today. I accept you as my Lord and Saviour and I surrender my life to you. Forgive me as I repent of my sins today. I believe that you died and you rose again. Wash me in your blood and write my name in the book of life. Thank you for making me your own. Amen.

If you have just made this decision, welcome to the team of those who can stare death in the face and say: Get lost, you are dead!
